I've tried to install GoogleEarth again today on my new computer and run into similar problem. Try to run it from command line and see the messages you'll get. As far as my problem is concerned I'm pretty sure that it is connected to the fact that I've never found enough time and will to properly setup 3D acceleration. Possible problem is also that I'm running 64-bit Debian.

I forgot to mention that this is a consequence of having to reinstall after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 on my dual core intel desktop.
Google earth worked fine on this box under Hardy Heron.

I think I've done all this ok and even have the google earth icon in my internet applications list but when I click on it or start from terminal I get the google earth opening screen with the starry world for a few seconds and then the app closes down without opening up for any action with no indication of what is wrong.
